Nurturing Young Minds: The Story of Ananda DISHA in Coastal Purba Medinipur
On a humid afternoon in a coastal village of Purba Medinipur, a group of children gather in a shaded courtyard. Some are carrying drawing books, some clutch skipping ropes. A few adolescent girls are discussing career plans, menstrual health, and the opportunities and dangers of the digital world. Nearby, a yoga session is underway.
At first glance, it may look like a collection of unrelated activities.
But together, they tell the story of Ananda DISHA.

Since 2016, the Society for Direct Initiative for Social and Health Action (DISHA) has been working with children and young people across 12 coastal villages of Purba Medinipur. What began as an effort to support disadvantaged rural children has gradually evolved into a vibrant ecosystem of learning, creativity, confidence-building, and community transformation.

At the heart of Ananda DISHA lies a simple belief: learning is about much more than examinations and report cards, and that it does not happen in classrooms alone. Young people today must learn core life skills—to think independently, care for themselves and others, navigate an increasingly digital world, have basic financial literacy, build meaningful livelihoods, and become responsible citizens. They need to be free-thinking and spirited, yet disciplined, self-aware, emotionally integrated, and prepared for the complexities of modern life.
To pursue this vision, Ananda DISHA has evolved into five interconnected streams of work.
The largest stream, Sānanda Pāth, engages children in art, yoga, sports, dance, environmental awareness, and civic learning—building confidence, creativity, teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership.
Dhārāpāt provides focused support in Mathematics and English, helping first-generation learners keep pace in school, overcome fear of difficult subjects, and avoid dropout.
Bāndhab connects vulnerable children with individual sponsors who support their education and development, offering both financial help and the powerful assurance that someone believes in their future.
For adolescent girls, Nandini offers a transformative space to discuss menstrual health, identity, safety, self-confidence, careers, financial literacy, digital awareness, and adulthood—helping them imagine futures beyond traditional expectations.
Uttaran supports young people who reach higher education despite hardship, offering scholarships, mentorship, and guidance as they pursue college and prepare for professional life with dignity and purpose.
The story of Susmita Bar beautifully illustrates how these different streams come together. (Link).
Susmita’s journey reflects the aspirations of hundreds of young people connected to Ananda DISHA.
The impact extends beyond individual success stories.

Children who once hesitated to speak in public now perform confidently before large audiences. Sports and creative activities have encouraged healthier lifestyles and reduced dependence on screens. Parents have become more engaged in their children’s development. Adolescent girls increasingly speak about careers, higher education, and economic independence. Nor is the concept of career restricted to getting jobs, but includes entrepreneurship in various fields. Conversations around child marriage, gender equality, mental wellbeing, and digital safety are slowly reshaping community attitudes.
Perhaps the most unexpected transformation has occurred in the cultural life of the villages themselves.
A decade ago, local festivals were often dominated by loud commercial entertainment. Today, many of these spaces are increasingly animated by tasteful cultural performances created and led by local children and young people. Songs, dance, recitation, yoga demonstrations, environmental campaigns, and cultural programmes have become part of village life. A quiet cultural renewal is underway, led by the very generation that Ananda DISHA has helped nurture.
Whether planting trees on World Environment Day, discussing artificial intelligence and future careers, preparing for examinations, or simply discovering the joy of creative expression, the children and young people of Ananda DISHA are learning that education is not merely about earning a livelihood. It is about becoming a well-rounded human.
Across the coastal villages of Purba Medinipur, a generation is growing up with greater confidence, awareness, and hope. They are learning to dream bigger, think deeper, and participate more actively in shaping their communities.
And in that journey lies the true pursuit of Ananda DISHA: not merely the joy of learning, but the joy of becoming.
