SANTANU CHACRAVERTI
President
Santanu Chacraverti is an activist associated with DISHA since 2004. He focuses on environmental conservation and livelihood issues, particularly pollution, coastal and wetlands protection, and nature-oriented farming. Previously an academic, he now works as a freelance researcher and writer. His earlier research, including his doctoral and post-doctoral work, explored the transmission and evolution of scientific ideas and local knowledge systems. Over the last decade, his writings have shifted towards environmental and livelihood topics. His monographs, short articles, and book reviews have been published by various institutions such as Jadavpur University, Asiatic Society, Pearson Education, ICSF Trust, ISEC Kolkata, and Anandabazar Patrika.

SASANKA SEKHAR DEV

Sasanka Sekhar Dev is a founder member of DISHA since 1995. He is a leading advocate on waste management and toxicity issues and is engaged with communities dependent on natural resources for sustainable living. He was associated in preparation of strategy for bio-medical waste management in West Bengal for the Department of Health & Family Welfare. He headed a research project “Bio-medical Waste – Inventory and Status of Management in West Bengal” for CPCB and WBPCB. He supported several municipalities to initiate municipal waste management through strategy building, source segregation and community mobilisation. He conducted research projects like “Socio Economic Condition of Waste Pickers in Kolkata Municipal Corporation Area” and “Composition and Ratio of Contents in Municipal Waste” in Kolkata.
Since 2006 he started campaign programme on safe e-waste management in West Bengal. He was associated with a study on Inventory of E-waste in Kolkata. He acted as a member of the monitoring committee constituted by WBPCB for assessment of quantity of e-waste generation in Kolkata Metropolitan Area. He headed “E-waste Recycle Project” to formalise the informal sector for developing safe e-waste management in the state. He motivated one informal entrepreneur to install the first E-waste dismantling unit in West Bengal.
